Which AquaDuty surface pump do you need?

The choice comes down to how much water you need, how much pressure, and whether the water is above or below the pump. Peripheral pumps (AQD 60, 70, 80) give high pressure at low flow – ideal for one house fed from a tank at ground level. Single-impeller centrifugal pumps (AQD 146, 158, 170, 190) move more water at moderate pressure for transfer, irrigation and small pressure sets. Twin-impeller pumps (AQD-140-2 to AQD-200-2) put two impellers in series for more head at a useful flow, for multi-storey supply, long irrigation runs and pressure sets. The AQD 10H jet pump is the only self-priming model, so it is the one to use when the water level is below the pump. The PressurePro 700 adds variable-speed constant pressure for the quietest, steadiest household supply.

Only the AQD 10H jet pump and the PressurePro 700 are self-priming. The single-impeller, twin-impeller, peripheral and multistage pumps need a flooded suction (water level above the pump) or a foot valve with a full suction pipe. Installed dry on a lift, they will run without pumping and damage the mechanical seal.

Performance from the rating plates

AquaDuty publishes the operating range on each pump’s rating plate. The flow range is the band the pump is designed to work in; the head range gives the pressure across that band, and the maximum head is the shut-off pressure at zero flow.

ModelFlow range (l/min)Head range (m)Max. head (m)Current
AQD 60M5 – 3533 – 5402.5 A
AQD 70M / 70T5 – 4552 – 5553.8 A
AQD 80M5 – 5060 – 5655 A
AQD 80T5 – 5060 – 5651.7 A
AQD 10H5 – 7040 – 20446 A
AQD-140-25 – 15540 – 5469 A
AQD-160-25 – 16048 – 55410.5 A
AQD-180-210 – 16052 – 106013.5 A
AQD-200-2 (400 V)5 – 23560 – 5658 A
Maximum head is shut-off head. At that pressure the pump delivers no water. Size on the head you need at your working flow, which will be well below the maximum figure. For the single-impeller AQD 146–190 range and the PressurePro 700, AquaDuty publishes curves rather than a rating-plate table – ask us for a duty-point check.

How to size an AquaDuty pressure pump

  1. Count the outlets that run together. Allow about 10–12 l/min per shower or tap, and 15–20 l/min per garden sprinkler.
  2. Find the height. Measure from the water level in the tank to the highest outlet.
  3. Add the pressure you want at the tap. 2 bar is about 20 m of head; 3 bar about 30 m.
  4. Add pipe losses. Allow roughly 10–20 % of the pipe length for 25 mm pipe at normal household flows.
  5. Pick the pump whose head range covers your total head at your flow.

Worked example: a house with two showers running (about 24 l/min), a tank at ground level, a first-floor bathroom 5 m up and 2.5 bar wanted at the shower (25 m). Pipe losses on a 30 m run add about 4 m, for about 34 m total. The AQD 70M (52 – 5 m over 5 – 45 l/min) or the AQD 80M (60 – 5 m over 5 – 50 l/min) cover this; add an AQD 01 controller for automatic start and stop. For three or more outlets at once, step up to the AQD-140-2 twin impeller.

Installation notes that prevent failures

  • Mount the pump level, close to the water source, in a dry ventilated enclosure – IP44 motors are not weatherproof.
  • Use a suction pipe at least the size of the pump inlet, keep it short, and slope it up towards the pump so air cannot collect.
  • Fit a foot valve and fill the pump and suction pipe with water before first start (except the AQD 10H after its first priming fill).
  • Fit a non-return valve and isolating valves on the delivery side.
  • Protect single-phase pumps with a correctly rated breaker; three-phase T models need a motor starter with overload protection.
  • Never run the pump dry – dry running destroys the mechanical seal within minutes. The AQD 01 controller adds dry-run protection.

Typical applications

  • Household pressure boosting from a ground-level storage tank
  • Transfer between tanks and supply to header tanks
  • Garden and small-plot irrigation
  • Pressure sets for small buildings (twin-impeller models)
  • Shallow wells and sumps below the pump (AQD 10H jet pump)

Frequently asked questions

Which AquaDuty pump is self-priming?

The AQD 10H jet pump and the PressurePro 700. All other AquaDuty surface pumps need a flooded suction or a foot valve with the suction pipe filled before starting.

What is the difference between the M and T models?

M models run on single-phase 230 V; T models run on three-phase 400 V. The hydraulics are the same size, so a 158M and a 158T give the same performance.

Do I need a pressure tank with the AQD 01 controller?

No. The AQD 01 starts the pump when a tap opens and stops it when flow stops, so it works without a pressure tank. A small tank can still reduce starts when taps drip.

Can the AQD 01 run a 1.5 kW pump?

No. The AQD 01 is rated 10 A and 1.1 kW maximum. Use the 16 A AQD 02 for larger single-phase pumps.

How much pressure does a peripheral pump give?

The AQD 80M reaches 65 m (about 6.5 bar) at shut-off and gives 60 – 5 m across 5 – 50 l/min, which is enough to boost a double-storey house from a ground-level tank.

Why choose a twin-impeller pump?

Two impellers in series give more head than a single impeller at the same flow. The AQD-180-2 gives 52 – 10 m across 10 – 160 l/min, for multi-storey supply, long irrigation lines and pressure sets.

Can AquaDuty surface pumps be installed outside?

Only under cover. The motors are IP44, so they must be sheltered from rain and direct sun in a ventilated pump house or cover.

Which mechanical seal do I need?

Seal 158/170/190 fits the single-impeller pumps, seal 60/70/80 the peripheral pumps, and seal 10H/100S the AQD 10H jet pump and 4AQD 100S multistage pump.

What is the PressurePro 700 good for?

Steady household pressure. Its variable-speed permanent-magnet motor holds the set pressure as taps open and close, runs quietly and is set up from the Smart Life app over Bluetooth or WiFi.
