Vega Sewage Pumps

A Vega submersible sewage pump sits in the sump, septic tank or pump station and pushes waste water and solids up to the sewer or drainage point. Vega builds four types: stainless steel vortex pumps and screened cast iron pumps for grey water and drainage, static-cutter pumps that shred raw sewage, and heavy channel-impeller pumps for municipal and industrial pump stations. This guide shows which type suits your waste water, the full specifications and current prices.

Screened pumps are not for raw sewage. The WSD and VX ranges pass small solids only. Toilet waste, wipes and rags block them. Use a C range cutter pump or a B range channel pump for raw sewage, and keep wipes out of the system whatever pump you choose.

VX and VXM stainless steel vortex pumps

Stainless steel body with a recessed vortex impeller that spins the water rather than pushing solids through the blades. Maximum solids 35 mm, 2" outlet, liquid up to 40 °C. The single-phase VXM is fitted with a float level switch for automatic operation.

WSD and WS screened cast iron pumps

Cast iron construction with an open-channel impeller behind a suction screen, for drainage, grey water and screened sewage. WSD models are single-phase 220–240V; WS models are three-phase 380–415V. The model code gives the nominal flow in m³/h and the head in metres: the WSD20-15 is about 20 m³/h and 15 m.

C range raw sewage pumps with static cutter

The star-shaped inlet plate grabs stringy solids and the cutter chops them to manageable sizes before they reach the impeller. That lets the C range pump raw sewage through a smaller rising main without blocking. Cast iron, maximum immersion depth 10 m, liquid up to 40 °C.

Duckfoot assemblies and stainless steel WQK

A duckfoot bend bolts to the floor of the pump station. The pump slides down guide rails and seals onto it, so it can be lifted out for service without anyone entering the sump. Vega duckfoot assemblies suit the B and C ranges; guide rails are not included.

Sizing a sewage pump

  1. Flow. Size to the peak inflow into the sump, not the daily average. For a house, 1 to 2 l/s at peak is typical; for larger buildings add up the fixtures.
  2. Head. Vertical lift from the lowest water level in the sump to the highest point of the rising main, plus friction in the pipe and fittings.
  3. Velocity. Keep at least 0.7 m/s in the rising main so solids do not settle. Do not oversize the pipe.
  4. Solids. Grey water and drainage: screened or vortex. Raw sewage: cutter or channel impeller.
  5. Power. 220V single-phase up to 2.2 kW; larger pumps on 380V three-phase.

Worked example

A guest house needs to lift raw sewage 8 m to the municipal line through 60 m of 50 mm pipe. Peak inflow is about 12 m³/h, which gives 1.7 m/s in a 50 mm pipe, well above self-cleansing speed. Friction adds roughly 4 m, so total head is about 12 m. The 50C21.1 cutter pump (27 m³/h maximum, 15 m maximum head) suits this duty on 220V or 380V; confirm the flow at 12 m on its curve.

Installation essentials

  • Float switch or level control so the pump starts and stops with the level. The VXM has one fitted; for others add a Vega FS03 float switch or a Y1 / 30Y controller with probes.
  • Sump size so the pump runs at least a minute or two per cycle.
  • Non-return and gate valve on the discharge; use a ball-type non-return valve for raw sewage.
  • Lift on a chain or rope, never on the cable.
  • Duty and standby pumps with an alarm on critical pump stations.
  • Biological treatment. Vega Sewage & Fat Destroyer breaks down grease and fat that build up in sumps and on floats.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Vega WSD pump handle toilet waste?

No. The WSD and WS are screened drainage and grey-water pumps for particles up to 15 to 25 mm. For raw sewage with toilet waste use the C range static cutter or the B range channel pumps.

What is a static cutter pump?

A pump with a cutting plate at the inlet that shreds solids and stringy material before the impeller, so raw sewage can go through a smaller pipe without blocking.

What is the difference between VX and VXM?

Both are stainless steel vortex pumps. The VXM is single-phase 220V with a float switch; the VX is three-phase 415V.

How big a solid can a Vega sewage pump pass?

The WSD passes 15 to 25 mm, the VX 35 mm and the B range 60 to 70 mm. The C range cuts solids rather than passing them whole.

Which Vega sewage pump for a septic tank?

For the outlet chamber with clarified water a WSD is enough. For raw sewage from the first chamber use a 50C21.1 cutter pump.

What does WSD20-15 mean?

A screened sewage and drainage pump for about 20 m³/h and up to 15 m of head, single-phase.

What is a duckfoot?

A base bend fixed to the floor of the pump station. The pump slides down guide rails and seals onto it, so it can be removed without entering the sump.

How fast should sewage move in the rising main?

At least 0.7 m/s so solids stay in suspension, and not much above 2.5 m/s to limit friction and wear.

Need a sewage pump sized?

Tell us what goes into the sump, how high and far the rising main runs, the pipe size and the power on site. We will choose the pump, float switch and fittings.
