Wilo 4 Inch Borehole Pumps

Wilo 4” submersible borehole pumps are multistage centrifugal pumps that fit a standard 100 mm (4”) borehole and lift water from depths of 20 m to over 250 m. The pump end (hydraulic) is bought separately from the 4” motor and its control box, so the same pump can be matched to the motor size the duty needs. We currently have Wilo Actun FIRST and XIRO SPU4 pump ends, 0.37 kW and 0.55 kW oil-filled 230 V motors with matching control boxes, and ready-matched complete sets on clearance at reduced prices. Prices include VAT; stock is limited to the quantities on hand.

What is on special

• Wilo Actun FIRST SPU4 pump ends – 18 models from 1 to 8 m³/h, 4 to 44 stages, for 0.37 to 4 kW motors. Stainless steel and Noryl construction, NEMA 4” coupling.
• Wilo XIRO SPU4 pump ends – 8 models (B2 version) from 1 to 9 m³/h, up to 253 m head, for 0.37 to 1.5 kW motors.

How to choose the right pump

Step 1 – flow. Pick the series by the flow you need at the tap, tank or irrigation line. The series number is the nominal flow in m³/h: series 01 = 1 m³/h (about 17 l/min), 02 = 2 m³/h, 03 = 3 m³/h and so on. A household with a 5 000 l tank is usually a series 01 to 03 pump; small irrigation and livestock a series 05 to 09 pump.

Step 2 – head. Add up the total head: the pumping water level in the borehole (not the borehole depth) + the height to the tank or highest tap + friction loss in the pipe (roughly 5 m per 100 m of correctly sized pipe) + any pressure you want at the outlet (10 m per bar). Choose the model whose head at your flow, in the performance tables below, is a little more than that number. The second number in the model code is the number of stages – more stages, more head.

Step 3 – motor. Each pump end lists the motor it is designed for. Pump ends for 0.37 kW and 0.55 kW motors can be bought as a complete set with the 230 V oil-filled motor and control box. Larger pump ends (0.75 to 4 kW) are supplied as hydraulics only – send us the model and we will quote the matching motor.

4” motors and control boxes

Wilo X4-OR oil-filled 4” submersible motors, NEMA coupling, 230 V 50 Hz single phase, with 1.5 m motor lead. The control box holds the start/run capacitor and overload protection and must match the motor size.

Complete 4” borehole pump sets

Each set is the pump end, the matching X4-OR oil-filled 230 V motor and the control box, assembled and ready to install. The sets below are the only pump ends in this clearance that can be matched to the 0.37 kW and 0.55 kW motors in stock.

Installation guidelines

• Install the pump at least 1 m above the bottom of the borehole and fully below the pumping water level; the motor must stay submerged with water flowing past it (minimum 0.08 m/s past a 4” motor – use a cooling shroud in wide boreholes or sumps).
• Hang the pump on the rising main, never on the cable. Fit a safety rope through the pump’s rope eyes and tie it off at the well head.
• Use a non-return valve within 10 m of the pump if the pump end does not have one built in, and another at the surface on long pipelines.
• Use submersible cable sized for the motor current and the full length to the control box – see our cable sizing guide. Join the motor lead with a heat-shrink or resin joint kit.
• Protect the motor with the matching control box and a dry-run protector or level probes; a borehole pump that runs dry is destroyed in minutes.
• Check rotation (three-phase only) and never throttle the pump to below the minimum flow of its series.
